How to Set Nova Launcher as Default Launcher

This blog post is all about how to set up Nova Launcher as the default launcher on your Android device.

It’s a simple process that takes less than 5 minutes and will add some great features such as quick access to Google Now, customizable app drawer tabs, and infinite scrolling through your home screens.

So make sure, you have to download the latest version of Nova Launcher, if not; download it from Google PlayStore.

Set Nova Launcher As Default Launcher

Changing launchers can be intimidating but this guide makes it easy!

Step 1. Open Settings

This can be done in two ways. The fastest method is to swipe down the notification shade and tap the cog icon, which will take you directly to your settings.

Alternatively, you can navigate there manually by opening your app drawer (the group of all installed apps on your device) and tapping ‘Apps’.

From there, choose ‘Settings’ in your sidebar menu options.

Step 2. Open Apps Settings

You need to open the Apps section before continuing; it is not visible in Nova Launcher by default (more on that later).

There are a number of ways to do this but if you’re using the Google Now Launcher the quickest way is swiping up from the bottom of any home screen – this will bring up an overlay at the bottom of your screen with several options including Nova Launcher.

Step 3. Open App Info

Scroll down to ‘Nova Launcher’ and tap it. Scroll all the way to the top of the next menu and select ‘App info’.

You can also access this by hitting ‘Open’ under All Apps in step 2, but you’ll need to open the drawer fully first if you use this method!

Step 4. Tap Default

After opening Nova’s settings (by tapping ‘Default’), simply select whichever launcher is currently set as default (this should be Google Now unless you’ve changed it) and choose ‘Nova Launcher from the list that pops up.

This will set Nova Launcher your new default launcher – it cannot be set as the default launcher if it isn’t currently installed.

Step 5. Configure Nova Settings

Everything is now ready! Find your new home screen and enjoy quick, easy access to the Google Now page from any screen by swiping up or down on your dock anywhere on that screen.

To change more of these settings, open the app drawer and tap ‘Nova Launcher’. This allows you to manage app drawer tabs (including a tab for apps only), adjust infinite scrolling, workspace options and lots more depending on which version of Nova Launcher you have installed.

Nova also has a great selection of themes available – go check them out in the Play Store!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

I selected Nova as the default launcher but now I want to switch back to Google Now Launcher – what do I do?

You need to unselect Nova as your default launcher and select Google Now instead.
To do this, open the app drawer and tap ‘Nova Launcher’ (you can access it from any screen by swiping up and tapping the cog icon).
Scroll down and select ‘Nova Settings’ Select ‘Reset’ at the bottom of that menu and then tap ‘Reset Home Screen Layout’.
From this point onwards you’ll be able to set either launcher as your default again

Can I change more settings?

There are lots of settings available in both launchers; more than we could reasonably cover in one article!
Nova Launcher offers everything from icon packs to scroll effects, drawer groups, gestures and loads more.
The Google Now Launcher has some great features too – particularly the personalized page on the far left of your home screen if you choose to use it (which is accessed by swiping right).
It learns what apps you use most often and will display them first on this page.

Will using another launcher break any app I have installed?

Almost certainly not!
The majority of Android launchers are free to install and very easy to switch between; just follow these instructions again for whichever launcher you wish to try out next!

Changing launchers can seem complicated but once you get used to it there are so many benefits, especially if you have a device with a large screen.

And that’s about it!

Nova Launcher is an excellent launcher despite the name, and if the above guide has helped you set it up I’d love to hear from you!
